Week 11: Rossini Bistro

Rossini’s on Glenferrie Road, Malvern is a favourite for many I know – and a restaurant which was been requested for Spag Blog rating by a number of people over the last 10 weeks. I’ve eaten at Rossini’s a few times over the years, and don’t remember being wowed by their Spag Bol, but I was willing to wipe all preconceived notions in the name of this blog. And so I did.

The result? This:

A vibrant red coloured bolognese sauce stirred through (yay!) a bowl of delicious, delicate pasta cooked al dente.

Flavour-wise I wasn’t wowed, yet again. It was good, but nothing OMG. The bright red sauce correlated with the tomato heavy flavour. The people I know who love Rossini’s rendition of Spaghetti Bolognese obviously like a more tomato based Bolognese. But not I. The sauce was sweet, but again like last week, lacked acidity to balance.

From a texture point of view, this one ticked all the boxes – the thinness of the Spaghetti was pleasing and it was cooked spot-on, the meat was tender and of good consistency – sauce thick with small balls of meat spread throughout.

Other down points were the under-seasoning and a lingering sweet aftertaste. Overall, Rossini’s dish was underwhelming. Not a fail, not a win.
