Week 48: South Yarra Trattoria

A lot of people have been asking me if I’m over spag bol yet. The answer is no, I don’t think I’ll ever get over a good bolognese, I’m just sick of mediocre ones. So, did South Yarra Trattoria on Toorak Road deliver above mediocre? Well…

First impression I was dubious with a sight I’ve seen too often – a runny sauce. Check out all the liquid under the pasta! The deep coloured bolognese looked promising, and I was hoping a rich flavour would compensate the liquidity.

The sauce was well balanced between meat and tomato flavours but I found the pasta overcooked. I was happy to see the sauce wasn’t as runny once I stirred it through further. However, it did have a slimy texture due to the excess liquid throughout. Match this with the overcooked pasta meant the texture was off the mark. Redeeming the overall consistency was the medium sized meat clumps.

I found the colour of the sauce looked deeper in flavour than it tasted – this one was light tasting and didn’t have the richness I was hoping for. It could have done with more pepper too.

Another mediocre spaghetti bolognese for a girl who has had a few too many of this kind. Sigh. Nothing notable, but not disastrous.

  1. I have to say our family rather likes a runny sauce, and as you’re the complete opposite we may not be visiting the winner!

    1. That’s what I love about bolognese – there is no right or wrong way to make it, and preference for consistency, flavour and so on are personal. If you like a runny sauce I would also recommend TiAmo and Mamma Vittoria.
